People considered the following when making their submissions.
- It is possible for an AWA to take away penalty rates, overtime and allowances, with no compensation. Are you concerned that you will lose take home pay under the new laws? Could this happen at your workplace or that of someone you know? You may wish to request that any legislation guarantees no cut in take-home pay.
- How you would feel negotiating directly with your boss about your pay and how you juggle work and family? Share an experience you’ve had with an AWA individual contract.
- Are you concerned that you will have less say over how many hours you work and when you work them? Hours worked at any time of the day or night can now potentially be at ordinary time rates, and meal breaks and minimum breaks are now negotiable. How would this affect your health, well-being and home life?
- Will your boss continue to bargain with you and your co-workers collectively, ie with your union? Have you ever worked in a workplace where the boss simply refused to negotiate an EBA (collective agreement)? If so, what could you do about it? Will this law make it better or worse?
- Are you employed on a State or federal award? How important have decisions of the Industrial Relations Commission been in setting decent wages and conditions at your workplace?
- Under these new laws, workplaces of less than 100 employees you will be exempt from unfair dismissal laws. Do you feel your job is secure, and that your employer will always act fairly? Do you know of anyone who has clearly been sacked unfairly and who, under the new laws, would be unable to get their case heard?
- If work 'choices' are so important, why can’t employers choose whether to opt in to the new Federal system or stick with the state systems, which often provide greater protections?
