Mr Wood: we want an explanation!

Liberal Member of Parliament Jason Wood has been feeling the heat recently thanks to members of the La Trobe Rights at Work campaign. This volunteer group, made up of Rights at Work supporters in the vital marginal electorate of La Trobe, Victoria, has repeatedly asked Mr Wood to debate them about the Howard Government’s industrial relations laws.

Mr Wood has repeatedly ignored these requests.

We want him to explain, in a public forum with his constituents, exactly why he voted for these unfair IR laws. It can be at a date that suits him, at a venue of his choosing. There will be an independent MC so Mr Wood gets ample time to explain himself.

You don’t have to live in the vital federal seat of La Trobe to get more active – everyone is welcome to join the La Trobe community group. Already more than 200 members meet regularly.

Dear Mr Wood,

I am emailing you as one of your constituents, and someone who is concerned about the impact of the Howard Government’s recent changes to IR legislation.

It worries me that the new IR laws:

Remove protection from unfair dismissal for millions of workers;
Make it easier for employers to push workers onto individual contracts that undercut take home pay an employment conditions;
Strip back award conditions;
Make it easier for employers to cut penalty rates, overtime pay, holiday loadings, redundancy pay and work allowances;
Make many ordinary union activities illegal
Reduce the power of the industrial relations commission;
Change the way minimum wages are set to make them lower.

I believe that there is enough concern in our community to warrant a public debate so that you can explain to voters why you strongly support these laws.

I understand that a debate has been proposed to you by the local Rights at Work community group for a date in June that suits you (either the 4th, 5th, 6th June) in a venue of your choosing in our community.

I also understand that the proposal would ensure an independent adjudicator - as well as ample time for you to state why you, our elected representative voted for these unfair IR laws.

Please respond to my email advising me of your intentions with regard to this matter.
