DON'T MISS OUT ON VOTING!
John Howard has changed the law to stop people from voting.
We all know that when the Howard Government got control of the Senate, they arrogantly ignored community opinion and rammed through WorkChoices. They also sneakily took the opportunity to do something equally undemocratic and unfair - changing the Electoral Act to try and stop people who don't like their policies from voting. This campaign encouraged Australians to enrol to vote ASAP so as not to miss out! More...

Rights at Work supporters spring into action!
What's left to take away?
In a leaked recording, the Government leader in the senate apologised that the Liberals' radical industrial relations laws did not go far enough. "There is still a long way to go," Senator Nick Minchin told the HR Nicholls Society, an advocacy group for extremist labour reform. Despite widespread opposition to the laws, the Howard Government would pursue "another wave of industrial relations reform" following the 2007 election, he said in his secret address. Senator Minchin’s speech was a clear sign that the Howard Government is determined to pass laws that are in the interests of big business at the expense of ordinary working families. Rights at Work supporters sprang into action! More than 500 letters were sent off to national, state and local papers… and more than 50 were published the day after! More...

Has your MP been naughty or nice?
Tell your MP you know how they voted.
Nearly 5000 YRAW supporters thought about their MP while doing their Christmas cards in 2005. Did your Member of Parliament help John Howard give us “WorkChoices”, or are they going to help send it back like an unwanted Christmas present? Together, we sent our pollies a polite reminder that their stance on IR would come back to bite them at the next election. Mr Howard needs to know that we will never forget his unfair laws. And Mr Beazley needs to know that we are deadly serious about creating a fairer Australia! More...

A Short Walk to do the Right Thing
Cross the Floor on WorkChoices!
Nearly 1500 people made multiple calls to Coalition Senators in their state asking them to do the right thing and cross the floor on WorkChoices. Some senators’ staff reported that over a hundred phone calls had been logged per day, with each caller stating their opposition to the Bill. This is the sort of energy that we must maintain in the lead up to the next election.   More...

A phenomenal 85,189 people signed our petition and wrote persuasive comments asking Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce to cross the floor on Work Choices. ACTU President Sharan Burrow presented the 6000 page document to Senator Joyce on Monday November 28 in Parliament House. While Senator Joyce may have chickened out on crossing the floor, our petition achieved front page coverage and led national news bulletins. 85,189 people showed the Howard Government that we were serious about fighting for our rights at work.    More...

More than 8000 emails to Spotlight
Support Spotlight workers
When the Rights at Work campaign found out that workers at Spotlight will be given a pay increase of just  two cents an hour in exchange for losing entitlements like penalty rates, rest breaks and overtime, we sprung into action. The Australian-owned chain of fabric and homewares stores employs 6000 workers and rakes in over $600 million a year. But new staff will lose up to $90 a week under the terms of Spotlight’s new AWA individual contracts. Over 8000 supporters emailed Spotlight's owners Morry Fraid and Ruben Fried to tell them how they felt about their company's actions. Rights at Work supporter Jasmine, a keen quilter, didn't stop at emailing the company - she even got into the Herald Sun! More...

Tell the Senate Your Concerns
Make an official Senate Submission
This campaign allowed people to make an official submission to the Senate Inquiry into WorkChoices. We set our initial target at 200 submissions. That was eclipsed within a few hours. Over the five days we ran the campaign, more than 5000 people made submissions to the Inquiry. While a little under a thousand were just a line or two opposing the industrial relations changes, nearly 4500 people flooded the Inquiry with detailed statements, relaying their personal experiences and persuasively arguing that WorkChoices should be thrown out of the Senate. John Howard wanted a quick and quiet Inquiry to rubber stamp his proposals. Your effort and determination showed him that Australians will fight for their rights at work. More...

November 15: half a million march!
National Day of Community Protest
The November 15 National Day of Community Protest will long be remembered by everyone who attended. Half a million Australians made their voices heard – not only in the capital cities, but in 300 community venues around Australia. For every person on the streets in Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin, Canberra, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane, there was another participating by Sky hook up in places as far away as Katherine, Caboolture, and Bunbury. Speaking at the Melbourne rally, Greg Combet said we will campaign for as long and as hard as it takes to overturn these laws. "Anyone who thinks our campaign will fade away had better think again. These past months have only been the warm-up to the main event. The real campaign starts now." More...
