Insecure work is a growing phenomenon in the Australian labour market. Approximately four million workers are in some form of insecure work, such as casual, short-term contracts or labour hire. It's highly likely that either you or someone you know is in insecure work.
This might suit some people, but that lack of job security and income certainty makes household budgeting and planning for the future really hard. It makes it hard to get a home loan and hard to build a career. It can even be a struggle to plan time outside of work.

We know that there is a strong mantra out there from business about 'flexibility' and 'productivity' when in reality more and more employers are shifting the costs and risks of employment onto workers. This might suit some employers who like the idea of being able to take someone off the roster whenever they like. They know it gives them power over employees and makes them less likely to stand up for their rights at work.
Insecure work is spreading into every sector of the workforce and every industry. It affects workers of all ages.
While some some workers choose to be in casual employment, Australia should be a place where reliable workers can have jobs they and their families can rely on.
That's why we've launched
Secure Jobs. Better Future.
We're going to begin by spreading the word about the campaign and making sure as many workers as possible understand the issues around insecure work. We are starting a new conversation with the community about the impact of insecure work. Throughout the campaign we're doing on-going research, and highlighting the work unions are doing to address insecure work in their industries.
We need to educate as many people as possible about this issue.

Brilliant! There are too many people doing more than one job that are struggling to make ends meet and this is supposed to be the lucky country. There are so many issues involved that its almost mind boggling thinking about how this 'phenomenon' can be slowed. Making workers eek out an existence like this will only lead to future problems with our economy.
If people can't afford the basics then they won't be able to afford the luxury things. If they aren't spending then they're saving. Not that I have a problem with this but it's not going to be good for the economy over the long term.
Talk about business not being able to see the forest for the trees.
But there's also the fact that none of these workers get to plan their lives. I couldn't imagine not knowing when and where I'll work or even how much I might make. Friends of mine regularly turn down social events because they're not sure if they'll have to go to work. They also tell me of the desire to be able to take holidays with their families - heck they just want to be able to take a holiday.
Great campaign! I'm fully behind you!
